The Most Important Lesson From My Book: Finding Your One Thing

By Bruce H. Jackson

One of the most important lessons I share in The 3 Secrets of Attentional Leadership (read the first chapter here) is simple: we all have the potential to get better.

Each of us is a complex system—moving through space and time, made up of countless parts, in constant relationship with our environments and the worlds where we work, compete, and play.

Here’s the kicker: Of the hundreds of things you could improve—sleep, nutrition, organization, mindset, habits—there’s usually one thing that would make the biggest difference. The one thing that, if addressed, removes distraction, eliminates obstacles, or builds the capacity to stay in flow longer.

That’s what I call Strategic Focus—placing your attention on the one change that unlocks the most leverage. From that flows Performance Focus—the day-to-day immersion, energy, and effectiveness you need to thrive.

Over the years, when I’ve worked with clients and we’ve sought to isolate that one thing—especially on the human side of the equation—it’s often surprisingly small and practical. Smiling more at people to build rapport. Taking 15 minutes each morning to plan out the day. Going for a short walk at lunch to reflect. Getting closer to eight hours of sleep at night. Making a quick list of what you’re grateful for. These little things, compounded over time, elevate the human condition, generate greater focus, remove barriers between who you are and what you’re doing, and invite you more directly into your flow.

Growth is always two-sided:

  • The technical side—your skills in the job, craft, or game.
  • The human side—the physical, emotional, mental, philosophical, and spiritual dimensions that make you a better person.

The real breakthrough comes when you identify one thing on each side—the single technical skill and the single leadership skill that, if developed, would most elevate your game. Over time, repeating this cycle creates your X-Factor—the unique blend of mastery and humanity that defines your greatness.

Work on both sides with intention, and your growth will lift you above the cloud line—closer to the sun, closer to your God-given potential.
